Bill graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and minors in Psychology and Spanish. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2003.
While in law school, Bill was selected as a member and co-captain of the ATLA Trial Team, was a member of the Moot Court Board, and recipient of the CALI award. He also served as a student mentor, writing tutor, and student representative to the Career Services Advisory Committee. Upon graduation, he received the Robert Goldberg Award in Trial Advocacy.
Bill joined our firm in September 2003 and became a partner in January 2011. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute, North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, Buncombe County Bar Association and Armadillo Club. Bill has served as an assistant coach to the Wake Forest School of Law ATLA student trial team. Additionally, he has presented continuing legal education through the National Business Institute on the topics of "Interpreting Coverage Under the Insurance Contract," "Litigating the Insurance Claim," "How to Present Your Case at Trial," and "How to Handle Post-Trial Issues." Bill served as chair of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys local government practice group from 2009 to 2010. He has also been recognized as a "Rising Star" by his peers in the 2010 - 2012 editions of Super Lawyers.
Bill's practice is focused mainly on liability and coverage issues. Bill also maintains an active workers' compensation practice. In the liability sector, Bill has defended numerous wrongful death claims, professional liability claims, general liability claims and has participated in the defense of medical malpractice claims. He has provided coverage opinions, prosecuted and defended declaratory judgment actions, and has provided legal advice on the creation and modification of coverage documents on behalf of insurers. Bill has appeared on behalf of clients and argued motions in District Court, Superior Court, and in front of the North Carolina Industrial Commission. In addition, Bill has participated in both jury and bench trials at the Superior Court level and has multiple appearances before the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
Bill is licensed to practice in the United States District Courts for the Western, Middle, and Eastern Districts of North Carolina. In April 2008, he moved to Asheville, North Carolina as part of the firm's opening of a Western North Carolina office.
