Bob graduated from Wake Forest University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his Juris Doctor degree cum laude from Campbell University School of Law in 1986. While in law school, he served as a staff member on the Campbell Law Review and received the American Jurisprudence Award for excellence in Contracts and Constitutional Law.

After graduation, Bob worked for two years as a law clerk to Judge Sidney S. Eagles, Jr. at the North Carolina Court of Appeals, where he expanded his knowledge of various substantive areas of the law and began to focus on the kind of trial and appellate practice he has pursued as a member of this firm. He joined the firm in July 1988 and became a partner in January 1993.

Bob, who practices in the areas of workers' compensation, construction defects and products liability, was chosen by his peers to appear in the 2006 North Carolina Edition of Super Lawyers. He lectured at the March 1996 Advanced Workers' Compensation Seminar sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association and is a member of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, and Wake County Bar Association. In 2009 and 2010 Bob was listed in The Best Lawyers in America for workers' compensation.
