Matt graduated from North Carolina State University in 2001, magna cum laude, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management, with a finance concentration. While at North Carolina State University, he was inducted into various honor societies, including The Golden Key Society and Order of Omega. He then attended law school at the University of North Carolina, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2004. During law school, he served as both a staff writer and articles editor for the North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology.

Since joining the firm in 2004, Matt has handled a wide variety of general civil litigation matters and workers' compensation cases. He devotes most of his time to representing and defending clients in general tort liability, commercial trucking and transportation litigation, and workers' compensation claims. Matt has successfully tried cases in the North Carolina state courts, before the North Carolina Industrial Commission and in multiple arbitration forums. He also maintains an active appellate practice.

Matt is a frequent lecturer who enjoys speaking to clients on a number of continuing education topics, and he has also been an instructor with the Duke University Paralegal Certificate Program, where he teaches a substantive course on torts. He has also been a speaker for the NCSU Scholar's Program. He is a member of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, North Carolina Bar Association, and Wake County Bar Association. In 2012, Matt was selected by his peers to appear as a "Rising Star" in the North Carolina edition of Super Lawyers.
