Joe graduated from George Mason University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and International Politics and was a four year student-athlete with the Swimming and Diving team. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law in May 2011.

At Ole Miss, Joe served as Chairman of the Moot Court Board and was a member of the National Moot Court team. Additionally, he placed first at the 2009 Daniel Coker Horton & Bell Appellate Advocacy Competition and was runner-up finisher at the 2010 John J. Gibbons National Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition. Upon graduation, Joe was inducted into the Order of the Barristers.

During the summer of 2010, Joe served as judicial intern for Justice Paul M. Newby of the North Carolina Supreme Court and worked as a summer associate at Teague Campbell. In 2009, he was certified as a Blackstone Fellow following successful completion of the Blackstone Legal Fellowship, conducted by the Alliance Defense Fund.

Joe joined Teague Campbell in the fall of 2011.
