Jan attended Peace College and graduated from East Carolina University, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina. After graduating from law school, Jan worked in a private law practice for approximately five years, and then for fourteen years as an attorney with the federal and state governments. She then served as a Deputy Commissioner with the North Carolina Industrial Commission for over six years. Jan joined the firm in 1995 and became a partner in January 2004.

Jan is a member of the Defense Research Institute, North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association. She served as a member, course planner and lecturer for the North Carolina Bar Association Workers' Compensation Section.

Jan, who is admitted to practice in all of the North Carolina state courts, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, was chosen by her peers to be listed in the North Carolina edition of Super Lawyers.
