Courtney graduated from Wake Forest University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and received her Juris Doctor degree from Wake Forest University in 2004. While in law school, Courtney competed on the ATLA Trial Team and was a finalist in the 2003 Southeast Regional ATLA Competition. She received the CALI award and an award from the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers for outstanding trial advocacy. Courtney was also a Teaching Assistant in Legal Research and Writing.
Courtney joined our firm in September 2004. She divides her practice between workers' compensation, civil defense, insurance coverage and litigation, appellate litigation, and professional liability defense, including medical malpractice. Courtney is licensed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina and has appeared on behalf of clients there, in Superior Court, and the North Carolina Industrial Commission. She has made numerous appearances at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Courtney is a member of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association, and Wake County Bar Association. She is also a former co-editor of The Litigator, the newsletter published by the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Courtney enjoys volunteering with Urban Ministries, the Helen Wright Center for Women, and StepUP Ministry.
Courtney has published "Interpreting Coverage Under the Insurance Contract" and "Litigating the Insurance Claim" for a continuing legal education seminar. In addition, she has served as a continuing legal education instructor for the North Carolina Bar Association, presenting on how to defend workers' compensation claims. Courtney has also presented at numerous custom-designed seminars for our employer and insurance carrier clients, including topics such as return-to-work, interactions with rehabilitation professionals and medical providers, compliance with Industrial Commission filing requirements, investigating and handling claims, Medicare issues impacting claims, and changes to North Carolina law and significant workers' compensation decisions. In 2011 and 2012, Courtney was selected by her peers to be listed as a "Rising Star" in the North Carolina edition of Super Lawyers.
